Educational Background
Choosing to pursue an advanced degree, I have always been drawn to why we do the things we do. I have a particular interest in helping teens and young adults. My clinical philosophy centers around being able to help a teenager, young adult, or family, change the trajectory now to help provide a richer and fuller tomorrow. I know that during the teen and young adult years is the time to act.
In pursuing my education, my focus has been on specializing in teen therapy, young adult counseling, and family therapy. I also enjoy working with women and helping women be their best selves.
I chose the track in undergraduate and graduate school that would best enable me to be of help to teens, young adults, and families. I attended the University of Houston-Clear Lake where I earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology-Behavioral Science.
In 2009, I graduated with my Master of Science in Counseling and since graduating, I began working with teens, young adults, and families and have never looked back!
Professional Background & History as an Experienced Teen, Young Adult, & Family Counselor
In 2008, I began my career at a Women's Center and when graduating in 2009, began counseling women, teens, and young adults at the Center. Here, I provided individual therapy to women who has experienced family violence, sexual abuse, and other forms of trauma or PTSD.
Along with providing therapy for women, I also provided teen therapy and young adult counseling for the children of the women I worked with. It was not uncommon for these teens and young adults to struggle emotional or behavioral challenges. I also provided family therapy where appropriate.
I have also worked at several psychiatric hospitals in the Katy, Texas and Houston area as an Adolescent Inpatient Therapist. Here I provided counseling tailored to teen boys and girls who had been engaging in self-harm behavior and/or suicidal ideation. I provided teen counseling, young adult therapy, as well as group therapy. My work as an Adolescent Inpatient Therapist led to becoming a Clinical Service Leader where I mentored other therapists.
I have most recently worked at an outpatient therapy center where we provided Day Treatment and Intensive Outpatient services to teens and young adults. As a teen counselor and young adult therapist, I provided individual therapy and group therapy. Among the challenges that I have provided counseling for include:
-
Bipolar
-
Persistent Anger & Defiance
-
Self-Harm
-
Suicidal Ideation
I have found that my personal and clinical approach establish a quick connection with the teens, young adults, and families I work with. As a teen counselor, young adult therapist, and family therapist, I know this is a key element in helping people overcome the challenges of today, to have a brighter tomorrow!
Counseling Approaches Supported by Research
As a teen therapist, young adult counselor, and family therapist, it has been important to me that I use those counseling approaches that are supported by research. These approaches have been shown to be effective and, in many cases, in the least amount of time.
The counseling approaches that I have found to be effective in my work with teens, young adults, and families include:
I have found success in these approaches in working with a wide verity of emotional and/or behavioral challenges.
My Personal Approach in Therapy
While the counseling approaches are an important factor in therapeutic healing, the therapist's personal approach is also important. In my approach to therapy with teens, young adults, and families, you will find me warm, accepting, non-judgmental, and confidential.
I want to provide a warm environment where my clients can feel they can talk about the challenges that stand as obstacles in their way. While teen therapy, young adult counseling, and family therapy is a place of warmth and acceptance, there is also room for humor in my approach.
You will also find that I make myself available to clients in between sessions as well. Therapy is often what happens in between sessions as your teen, young adult, and family apply what is learned in therapy. And you will sometimes have questions or come up against obstacles that you would like to consult me with me on.
I encourage my clients to not wait until the next session but text, email, or call me. When a teenager reaches out, I also make it clear that I will let the parents know while also maintaining confidentiality related to the conversation had. However, if the conversation centers around self-harm or suicidal ideation, the parents will be informed.
