Personal, Educational, & Professional Background

Personal, Professional, & Educational Background

Katy Teen & Family Counseling is a fit for me as we share the same values. It's important to me that the teens and young adults I see in teen counseling, young adult therapy, and family therapy get to know me. It's difficult to establish a relationship of trust otherwise.

Below is a bit about my personal life, my education, and my professional journey. I am incredibly fortunate to be able to use the skill, knowledge, and experience to help others through tough times in their lives. I am looking forward to helping your teen, young adult, and family.

A Little Bit About Me

My name is Emiliano and I am a bilingual, Spanish and English, Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have been in clinical social work since 2008 and I am devoted and dedicated to improving the lives of teens, young adults, and families. My wife and I reside in Houston, Texas raising our four active children.

I also have a passion for helping to improve the communities that we are in. My support for teens, young adults, and families is not only at the teen counseling, young adult counseling, and family therapy level. I want to improve the communities that surround us to help our families thrive.

One way I have found to give back is in the scouting program. I enjoy volunteering and am an active part of my children’s Scouting experiences. Scouting has been a large part of my life.

The values and character building that scouting promotes match my personal values as an individual, husband, father, and your therapist. Helping other cub and boy scouts learn the scouting values will help them contribute in a meaningful way throughout their lives in helping their communities.

I approach teen therapy, counseling for young adults, and family counseling with the belief that people are experts on their own lives. My role is to help your teen, young adult, and family find balance. I help by identifying challenging areas and help your teen, young adult, and family improve and overcome. Helping to increase coping skills and improve personal relationships is at the heart of my counseling practice.

I have studied Crisis Intervention, Play Therapy, Trauma Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I am very much a client centered therapist. I approach therapy like a partnership. I may steer and guide as I see clinical opportunities to do so and I draw on the teen, young adult, and family as experts in their lives. If you have the motivation and the drive, I have the experience and expertise to help.

Educational Journey

My path to becoming a teen, young adult, and family therapist started with graduating from University of St. Thomas with a Bachelor's Degree. My degree was in Spanish and Catholic Studies, with minors in Philosophy and Theology.

I have always been fascinated by psychology and was looking for a way where I could combine my Bachelor’s degree education with a higher education in the helping profession. I chose to study Clinical Social Work and in 2008, I graduated from the University of Houston with a Master's Degree in Social Work and Political Advocacy.

As I work to help others, I know how important it is to look at the system that a person is in -- a teen or young adult within a family system for example. I know through teen counseling or counseling for young adults, I can help teens and young adults through their struggles.

To maintain those long-term changes, a part of their therapy journey will include family therapy. As I help the family learn the skills and tools the teen or young adult knows AND how to implement those, the teen and young adult's chances at long term change are greater.

Family therapy is an essential part of the teen or young adult sustaining the changes they have made during counseling. Whether for teen depression, teen anxiety, ADHD/ADDtrauma therapy, PTSD treatment, school problem, having the family play an active part in teen counseling and young adult therapy is important.

Professional Journey -- Work Experience

Since earning my Master's Degree, I have been engaged in helping teens, young adults, and families through teen counseling, counseling for young adults, and family therapy. I have also sought to help the larger system by providing supervision for up and coming therapists and teaching as a field instructor for Texas Southern University and the University of Houston Graduate School of Social Work.

I have worked with high-risk teens, young adults, and their families. I provided teen counseling, counseling for young adults, family therapy, and crisis services during a very vulnerable time in their life. There are times when teens, young adults, and families need support and I have been fortunate to be able to provide this therapeutic support through teen counseling, therapy for young adults, and family therapy.

While providing teen counseling, young adult counseling, and family therapy, I also developed a social emotional learning and anti-bullying program. I saw firsthand the devastating impact bullying can have on a teen's sense of self.

I also provided training in this program to help schools and other organizations with the goal of increasing awareness around teen mental health. In conjunction with the anti-bullying program, I facilitated a leadership institute for teens. Here they learned leadership skills which helped develop their self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth.

Professional Journey -- Professor, Supervisor, & Mentor for Therapists

While providing teen therapy, young adult therapy, and family counseling, I also worked as an Adjunct Social Work Professor at Texas Southern University (go Tigers!). I taught Introduction to Social Work, Human Behavior Through the Social Environment, and Social Work Policy.

Due to the success I have had in teen therapy, counseling for young adults, and family counseling, I was tasked to lead a team of therapists at a Behavioral Health Program serving children, teens, young adults, families, and older adults.  In addition to providing teen therapy, young adult counseling, and family counseling, I oversee the therapy services provided by the other therapists.

As a seasoned therapist, it is important to me that I give back and share the skill and knowledge I gained over the years with others. To do this, I also supervise therapist interns in the therapy they provide to others.

Therapists who are seeking full licensure are required to have supervision as they work toward full licensure. I enjoy knowing that I am able to use my knowledge and expertise to help other therapists be wildly effective. As they work with the teens, young adults, families, or older adults they work with, they can do so confidently and equipped with counseling approaches that work.
