At Katy Teen & Family Counseling, neurofeedback has become one of our more effective approaches in helping teens overcome a wide range of emotional or behavioral challenges. Being Board Certified in Neurofeedback, Jason Drake, LCSW-S, BCN leads the way in neurofeedback in our clinic.
While neurofeedback has been around since the 1970's, there are many who do not know what it is and if it can help. Neurofeedback has recently started garnering more attention as Technology has advanced sufficiently that neurofeedback can now be facilitate with a gaming computer.
Below we'll briefly discuss what qEEG neurofeedback is and what it can help with. For a deeper dive into neurofeedback, visit our "Neurofeedback" page.
What is QEEG Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a type of therapy that uses real-time feedback to train individuals to train their brain activity. This is done by placing sensors on the scalp to measure brainwave activity, which is then used to create a visual representation of the brain’s activity. This visual representation is called a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG).
The qEEG provides a map (see picture above) of the brain's activity, which is used to identify areas of the brain that may be overactive or underactive. Once these areas are identified, the neurofeedback therapist can create a training program that targets these areas. This program is safe, non-invasive, and comfortable and it involves using auditory or visual feedback to help the individual learn to self-regulate their brain activity.
Neurofeedback for Anxiety
Anxiety is a common emotional challenge that many teens face. It can range from mild to severe and can impact a person's daily life. Neurofeedback for anxiety can be an effective treatment for anxiety, as it teaches individuals to regulate their brain activity and reduce the symptoms of anxiety.
Research shows that neurofeedback can help reduce anxiety symptoms, including panic attacks, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and more. The qEEG provides a map of the brain's activity, which can identify areas of the brain that are overactive and contributing to anxiety symptoms.
By training individuals to self-regulate their brain activity, neurofeedback can help reduce anxiety symptoms and improve overall quality of life. If you suffer from anxiety and are looking for a non-invasive and drug-free treatment option, neurofeedback may be a good choice for you.
Neurofeedback for Depression
Depression is another emotional challenge that can be treated with neurofeedback. Like anxiety, depression can range from mild to severe and can impact a person's daily life. Neurofeedback for depression can be an effective treatment for depression, as it teaches individuals to regulate their brain activity and improve their mood.
Research also shows that neurofeedback can help reduce the symptoms of depression, including fatigue, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities. The qEEG provides a map of the brain's activity, which can identify areas of the brain that are underactive and contributing to depression symptoms.
By training individuals to self-regulate their brain activity, neurofeedback can help improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression. If you suffer from depression and are looking for a non-invasive and drug-free treatment option, neurofeedback may be a good choice for you.
Neurofeedback for ADHD
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common condition that can impact a person's ability to focus and control their impulses. Neurofeedback can be an effective treatment for ADHD, as it teaches individuals to regulate their brain activity and improve their attention and impulse control.
Research shows that neurofeedback for ADHD can help improve inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The qEEG provides a map of the brain's activity, which can identify areas of the brain that are not performing optimally and contributing to ADHD symptoms.
If you or your teenager struggles with ADHD and are looking for a non-invasive and drug-free treatment option, neurofeedback may be a good choice for you.

Sometimes life will throw challenges at us that create situations that put strain on our marriage or relationship. It may be due to:
Choices and actions that have been made by one partner.
Financial downturn in the economy creating financial strain.
Feeling like you're growing apart.
Feeling like you don't have as much in common as you used to.
Whatever the reason may be, marriage counseling and couples therapy can help. Couples therapy and marriage counseling has also been found to work in less time than individual therapy.
