Personal, Educational, & Professional Background
My name is Andrew Bienvenu, and I am originally from the Cajun land of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Growing up, my home consisted of three things: family, food, and football. It is illegal in Baton Rouge to schedule any personal events on Saturdays in the fall in Baton Rouge, because if you did, then you would be scheduling over an LSU game!
Every fall, my family and I would head on over to the football stadium of LSU, otherwise known as "Death Valley", to yell, eat, laugh, and enjoy the game. If you are an Alabama fan, that will be difficult for our therapeutic rapport, but in the end, I THINK we will be ok.
I also grew up heavily involved in the tennis community, where my interest in therapy ultimately grew out of. My family played tennis together as well as our greater community.
My mother created a tennis camp for kids and teenagers, where both of my brothers and sister grew up working. I first started off as a 12 year old junior helper, then a manager, then as a partner. This is where my interest in mental health began to skyrocket.
As I continued to coach, I found I had a unique ability to connect with teenagers and young adults. As such, it was not uncommon for them to want to talk about life challenges from time to time. Listening to their challenges motivated me to gain the education and experience necessary to help teenagers and young adults overcome these life challenges.
Professional & Educational Journey
My time working with teenagers in professional settings started in 2012. My first major experience entailed 10 years of managing a camp with 50+ kids and teenagers, from ages 3 to 18. This allowed me to see vividly the differences between each age group. As time went on, I began to pursue other ventures such as teenager tennis programs and developed those for 5 years.
During college, I transitioned into the mental health field working in an inpatient facility for teenagers. I continued my college education while providing therapeutic services to teens and young adults and earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from, you guessed it, LSU.
After graduating LSU, I was eager to experience other parts of the nation, while also continuing to provide therapeutic services to teens and young adults. I attended Regis College in Boston, Massachusetts. Here I received my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
In Boston, my professional work entailed helping to run a partial hospitalization program. This partial hospitalization program was designed for kids and teenagers where they would come after school and participate in individual, group, and family counseling.
Some challenges that I have particular strengths in helping teens and young adults overcome include:
-
Anger issues
-
Suicidal ideation
-
Self-harm behavior
-
Stress management
I now join Katy Teen & Family Counseling to continue what I consider my mission in life: providing teen counseling, young adult therapy, and family therapy to help teens and young adults overcome emotional or behavioral challenges.
There is no need for teens and young adults to struggle and suffer with these challenges. There is specialized help available to help. I would be happy to help your teen or young adult overcome their struggles while supporting you as parents along the way.
My Therapy Approach
Perhaps it is difficult to see all the possible upcoming adventures of life past the challenges you are experiencing today. It could feel that you don't have many options and you the feeling of overwhelm can be intense. It can leave you feeling very alone. You gather up as much energy as you can muster to take 1 step forward, but then it feels as if you took two steps back.
What would life be like past depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, severe stress, or relationship problems?
The first step of this journey is taking action, and if you are reading this, then you are already on your way.
I am here to provide you an environment to be heard and supported while receiving specialized counseling tailored to meet your individual needs.
Feeling connected to your counselor is critical in counseling. Therefore, my primary goal is connecting to the original individual sitting across from me. I want to get to know your unique insights, strengths, values, and experiences.
As I listen, I place myself within your world and see what it is like to live your life with these challenges from your point of view. Through this process, I will gain an understanding of where you are. We'll then work collaboratively to create a pathway forward to help you get to where you want to be.
As we take this journey together, I keep an eye out for where information and tools would be of benefit to you. These tools will be taken from therapeutic approaches that are supported by research and shown to be effective. Approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) are two of those approaches that I have extensive training and found to be effective in helping teens and young adults.
What is the journey, without a little humor at the appropriate times? This journey can oftentimes become heavy and demanding, however, when we can make it lighter, at the appropriate times with humor, it provides a little light along the way.
