Vision, Mission, & Values: Therapy for Your Teen, Young Adult, & Family

A badge with a purple boarder, twine attached, with the word purpose written on it and a compass next to it both sitting on rough grain wood. This represents the need for a therapist specializing in trauma katy, tx 77494. This also represents the need for a teen anxiety therapist houston, tx and therapists who specialize in teen therapy, young adult counseling, and family therapy.

For me, providing teen counseling, young adult counseling, and family therapy is a passion. I know, I know, this term "passion" is used frequently enough that it can water the term down. But in my case, it is what gets me up in the morning and drives me to excel -- and has since 2003.

The development of Katy Teen & Family Counseling as a group practice, including our Vision, Mission, and Values, is derived from this passion. They provide the framework in which I can focus my and my team's energies in helping the teens, young adults, and families in the Katy, Texas and West Houston area.

A large part of the reason I chose to specialize as a therapist has to do with my experience as a teenager. Looking back, there was help but we simply didn't access that help.

Life During the Teen Years . . . in the 1980's and 1990's

A boy laying down with his hands behind his head and his foot on a 1980's boom box that has a bent antennae. This represents the need for neurofeedback houston and emdr for depression katy, tx 77494. This also represents the need for a teen anxiety therapist houston, tx.

As a teenager in the 1980's and 1990's, topics around mental health were not widely discussed. Emotions and feelings were not a topic of conversation in my household as was common in many households in that generation.

Starting my teen years, I had developed teen anxiety. I had no clue what I was experiencing. I just "knew" that I was different than other kids and felt broken. And I largely suffered in silence.

Right or wrong, I didn't believe my parents could help. And not many people saw a therapist back then unless it was under extreme circumstances.

Teen anxiety led to teen depression. Teen anxiety and teen depression led to acting out behavior. Anxiety, depression, and acting out led to dabbling in substances. And all this led to a lot or family pain and chaos.

Some of these behaviors followed me into my young adult years. However, early on in my young adult years, I had some divine intervention that led me to turn my life around. I was very fortunate and will be forever grateful for this as it set me on my current path.

I looked back and wondered how things may have been different for me and my family had I been able to see someone who specializes in teen therapy, young adult counseling, and family counseling. My mission, my passion, is to provide to your teen, young adult, and family what very well could have helped me and my family in my teen years.

The Mission of Katy Teen & Family Counseling

The mission of Katy Teen & Family Counseling is:

"Providing a healing environment with experienced clinicians utilizing research supported therapy practices, we help teens, young adults, families, and couples restore hope, happiness, and connected family relationships."

It has always been important to me that our practice provide healing through our counseling and therapy approaches. Also important is that the environment itself is a healing environment:

  • We have scented plug-ins to provide aromatic comfort,

  • We have snacks and drinks for our clients and therapist to enjoy,

  • We have selected art that is visually appealing,

  • The furniture we have is selected was selected with comfort in mind,

  • We have music playing in the lobby and in the lounge,

  • Fidget toys to play with, and

  • Last but not least, a massage chair for parents to be destress and unwind while waiting for their teen (This is open to all ages 12 and above).

It's also important to me as the practice owner that our therapists provide those therapy approaches that are supported by research and have shown to be effective.

Among our approaches we provide that are supported by research, we provide:

The Current State of Teen & Young Adult Mental Health

This represents the need for trauma therapy katy, tx and ptsd counseling katy, tx 77494. This also represents the need for therapy for ptsd in katy, tx and therapy for gifted students katy, tx 77494.

Today, having therapists who specialize in teen, young adult, and family therapy is more important than ever. In October of 2021, the America Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Children's National Hospital, came out with a joint statement. They identified that child and adolescent mental health is now a "national emergency".

There has been a steady increase in problems related to emotional and behavioral struggles in teenagers and young adults for the past 10-15 years. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association:

"Nearly 7.7 million children and teens in the country – about one in seven – have at least one treatable mental health disorder, including depression, anxiety or ADHD, new research finds.

But half of these young people did not receive needed treatment from a mental health professional in 2016, according to the University of Michigan study published in JAMA Pediatrics.

“Untreated mental health disorders can have a debilitating impact on children’s healthful growth and throughout their transition to adulthood,” says lead author Daniel Whitney, Ph.D., a post-doctoral fellow with Michigan Medicine’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation."

If you have a teen or young adult who is struggling with emotional or behavioral challenges, take that first step and reach out to a therapist. Katy Teen & Family Counseling is but one of the many resources in the Katy, Texas and Houston area.

With the many individual therapists and group practices around, there is a therapist that is the right fit for you. Tackle these challenges today so that the transition into adulthood can be a smoother path and not a rough road.
